Mount Bromo on Java Island, located in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, rises to a height of 2,392 m and is considered the most active and “insatiable” on the island. For the last 20 years, it has been constantly “breathing”, its huge crater with a diameter of 600 m is constantly filled with smoke, and everything around, including paths and roads around the volcano, is strewn with a thick layer of ash. However, this does not prevent Bromo from attracting numerous tourists who come to admire the fantastic “lunar” landscapes, look at the mighty volcano from the observation deck at dawn, when its slopes are painted in pink and gold tones, and, finally, climb to the crater and walk along its edge at a bird's eye view.
The name Bromo comes from the Javanese name of the god Brahma, and the volcano is located in the middle of a sandy plain, which the locals call Segara Wedi, which means “Sand Ocean”. Here, on the northern slopes of Bromo, there is a Hindu temple, Pura Luhur Poten, built of dark volcanic stones. Every year, since the 15th century, the Tenggerese (Javanese people) celebrate the Yadnya Kasada festival for a whole month, during which they climb to the crater and throw sacrifices to the gods into the volcano's mouth - fruits, vegetables, flowers, rice, chickens and even livestock. That is why Bromo is called "insatiable".
The best time to visit the volcano is from April to October. The rainy season lasts from December to March. It is cool here during the day, the temperature does not exceed +20°C.

I personally love Pootoo birds and Java Finches if you would like to do one of those!
Your in luck! I actually have a whole race sheet for the pootoo as well as a legend here:
I have actually done quite a bit of research for them and am happy to give you a personal take on what one may look like in the world of animalia.
However in the spirit of my 5 second research fix I will do Java finches.
With my 5 seconds of research, I found that Java finches are a bird that has been bred by humans for quite some time and thus are considered quite tame. they have many different morphs and have a love for grain fields like rice.
My 5 second animalia take: there is a Java finches out there who spends much of their time as a butler to a large rice barron. They don't work in the fields themselves as their job is more to maintain the Barron's house, but on their days off they can be found walking through the rice fields inspecting the crop... or that's what they want you to think.
Secrectly, they are looking for rice plants or grains that are of top quality and will secretly place the rice in their pocket or bag. They then will take the rice home to their own secret rice field where they will experiment with the high-quality rice in an attempt to splice a rice plant together and make the most delectable rice in the world. Their rice patch is small, but the rice they grow within it is like nothing anyone else has ever seen...or rather, tasted.

JANUARY 3, 2025
In Everything
Ary Cahya (Central Java, Indonesia)
"In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it." - Isaiah 30:15 (NIV)
"When I was a child, I often saw Javan munia birds in rural rice fields. Farmers consider these birds pests because they eat the rice. Sometimes farmers shoot at the flock with air rifles. Interestingly, when the birds hear the shots, they panic and bump into each other or get stuck in tree branches, causing their own demise.
When sudden change happens, sometimes I’m just like those birds. I react poorly out of shock and panic, and I run into problems. Once when I heard a rumor, I reacted in panic — only to realize later that the rumor was incorrect. Likewise, often when I heard good news, I would get too excited and make snap judgments that I ultimately regretted.
Then I read Isaiah 30:15: “In quietness and trust is your strength.” Instead of putting panic and emotion first, I learned that it is better to remain calm and trust God. As Proverbs 19:2 says, “Hasty feet miss the way!” So I learned to be still, try to think clearly, and pray. I learned to trust that even if I stumbled, God would not allow me to fall."
TODAY'S PRAYER
"Dear God, help us not to follow our panic but rather to trust you in all circumstances." Amen.
Isaiah 30:15-18
"'15 Therefore, the LORD God, the holy one of Israel, says: In return and rest you will be saved; quietness and trust will be your strength but you refused. 16 You said, “No! We’ll flee on horses” therefore, you will indeed flee “and we’ll ride off; on swift steeds we will ride” therefore, your pursuers will be swift. 17 One thousand will flee at the threat of one, and at the threat of five you will flee, until you are left like a flagstaff on a mountaintop, like a flag on a hill. 18 Nonetheless, the LORD is waiting to be merciful to you, and will rise up to show you compassion. The LORD is a God of justice; happy are all who wait for him."' Allow the Lord to show His compassion and show up in everything. He blesses always. Joe

The documents outline the Dutch East India Company's interactions with local rulers and territories in Java during the late 18th century. They detail efforts to manage political relationships, including the submission of Maas Said, who pledged allegiance to the Soesoehoenang and the Company, and arrangements for local rulers such as the appointment of Pangerang Adepatty Sitja-Diningrat as Wedono. Economic measures were taken to address the aftermath of war and poor harvests, including granting income from bird's nest cliffs and tobacco to local leaders, lifting export bans on rice, and facilitating trade in goods like coffee, sugar, cotton, and indigo. These efforts reflect the Company's strategies to maintain control and foster allegiance while balancing local governance and economic stability.

LI. Gubernur Jenderal Jacob Mossel dan Dewan Hindia kepada Para Pengurus Kompeni Dagang Hindia Timur Belanda (HH. XVII)
Batavia, 31 Desember 1767
Ia diberi gelar kehormatan Pangerang Adepatty Mancoenagara.

LI. The Governor-General Jacob Mossel and the Council of the Indies to the Directors of the Dutch East India Company (HH. XVII)
Batavia, December 31, 1767
Your Excellency,
The forerunner (the ship) Blydorp, etc.
Regarding Java's eastern coast: Following Your Excellency's advice at the end of last December, it had been considered necessary to again take up arms against Maas Said this spring to bring him to submission. However, after the return of Governor Hartingh, who had been present in Samarang, the situation took a favorable turn.
The rebel, who had been hiding in the southern mountains, eventually submitted himself in writing, accompanied by assurances of friendship. He also expressed his willingness to send his brother Timor and a certain Pringalaya to the Soesoehoenang.
315
Maas Said declared his strong commitment to the Company and the Soesoehoenang, expressing his willingness to live and die with them. However, he was too overwhelmed with fear to travel quickly to Soeracarta, as the army was still nearby and had not yet departed. Additionally, the Sultan's brother-in-law, Radeen Tommogong Prowirodiridja, was present, with whom Maas Said felt ashamed and reluctant to engage.
He therefore pleaded for the Soesoehoenang to meet him outside of Soeracarta so he could show the necessary respect. He also requested to be allowed, like the Pangerang of Madura, to sit on a chair. Both requests were left to the discretion of His Highness, while the army of Cajoe Manu was withdrawn to Solo.
316
In the morning, gifts were sent to the court and Mr. Saif as encouragement, which had the desired effect. However, the representatives wished to submit a request that went beyond the Emperor's orders, which was not in line with the established protocols. This request was so excessive that it involved the Sultan's lands. The Governor tactfully redirected the request and explained to the Emperor that Java was divided, with the coastal areas being Company property, and that the situation in the uplands was well known.
Eventually, an agreement was reached, with satisfaction at receiving 4000 tjatjas (land parcels) located in Cadoesang, Laro Matesse, and the Southern Mountains. Additionally, at his humble request, the Boesoehoenang was allowed to swear loyalty to the Sultan and the Company on the Aleoran, with a promise to remain in Solo, appear on the customary Emperor’s days, and obey the orders of the rulers.
He was honored with the title of Pangerang Adepatty Mancoenagara. The Sultan's state administrator, Radeen Adepatty Danoeredja, and Major Donkel were informed of these events and summoned to the same location. All of this was done to facilitate the exchange of tjatjas in the aforementioned districts, which has already been successfully completed to the satisfaction of both parties.
317
An amount of f 6000 was permitted to be written off. The aforementioned Pangerang conducts himself appropriately and shows the necessary respect and obedience to the Soesoehoenang, whose court and status have since grown in both reputation and population.
The rulers emphasized their poverty, as well as the deplorable condition they were in due to the destruction caused by the war. Only a quarter of their possessions remained. They therefore requested support in the form of income from the bird’s nest cliffs and the Cadoesche tobacco. Following strong advice from the Governor, this was granted to them in a special letter dated April 1 of this year, on the condition of their eternal allegiance to the Company.
The Regent of Madura, Pangerang Adepatty Sitja-Diningrat, was, upon renewed request, appointed by decree on February 25 of this year as Wedono (chief regent) of the eastern territories and provinces from Grissee to Lassum. This excluded the regions of Sourabaya, Sumanap, and Pamacassan, which were outside his jurisdiction. This appointment was strictly personal and not transferable to his family.
Furthermore, the aged Tommogong Japara, the first regent of Japara, was granted resignation due to his advanced years. He was succeeded by his nephew, Wiero Mantri, who now bears the name Tommogong Praxa.
In Cheribon, due to poor harvests over the past two years and the resulting shortages, no rice or paddy had to be purchased by the Company office, as there was sufficient stock available. Daily shipments of rice were delivered privately from Java, which allowed the export ban to be lifted without concern and transportation to resume for everyone. The shipments consisted of 56 loads of rice, 1240 bundles of paddy, and moderate quantities of 976,937 pounds of coffee beans, 790,437 pounds of sugar, 15,260 pounds of cotton thread, 5000 pounds of indigo, and 7875 pounds of pepper.
314
LI. De Gouverneur-Generaal Jacob Mossel en Rade van Indie aan de Bewindhebbers der Generale Oost-Indische Compagnie (HH. XVII)
Batavia, 31 december 1767
WelEdele Hoogachtbare,

21st of October 2024: Sunda Coucal
Tumblr media
Continuing Critober, we have a mostly black bird with red eyes: the Sunda Coucal (Centropus nigrorufus), also known as the Javan Coucal. They’re around 48 cm in length [1].
They were, for a while, considered endemic to Java, meaning they were only found there [2]. However, just a few years ago, several different ones have been spotted in Bali and Madura as well. This is not entirely surprising, since they have also been found to be traded in Bali bird markets, and while they might’ve been imported from Java, it is likely they were captured in Bali [1].
Despite this apparent expansion, the Sunda Coucal isn’t a habitat generalist, being only tolerant to narrow habitats [3]. They rely upon coastal marshes and other wetter habitats with lots of vegetation. They don’t like foraging in the open, so require plenty of ground covering [4]. Even within places where they are found they are still deemed uncommon [3]. This, in addition to habitat destruction and trading pressures has led the IUCN to classify them as Vulnerable [2].
They primarily feed on large insects such as grasshoppers, beetles, and caterpillars and small vertebrates like frogs and snakes, but they have also been spotted consuming rice. Rather than eating ripe rice on the ground, they were observed to pluck the unripe seeds directly from the plant, which was the first time a Coucal has ever been seen doing something like that [5].

Where to take the best shots for Instagram in Bali?
Bali is one of the most Instagrammable destinations on Earth. Even if you haven’t set foot on the island, you’ve likely seen its iconic landmarks: lush green rice terraces, split gates, majestic views of Mount Agung, and swings soaring above the jungle. For bloggers and photography enthusiasts, Bali is a true paradise. These places, beautifully crafted by nature and enhanced by human touch, are not only the most photographed but also the most visited. You simply can’t miss them!
Rice Terraces
Tumblr media
The most impressive rice terraces are found at Tegallalang, just a 20-minute drive from Ubud, and Jatiluwih in Tabanan.
These rice plantations stretch across hillsides in giant steps, creating breathtaking scenery. Some terraces are over 1,000 years old and still serve their original purpose. Depending on the season, their appearance changes. When the rice is newly planted, the terraces fill with water, resembling thousands of mirrors—a spectacular sight! Equally stunning are the lush green terraces when the rice is mature. You can stroll along the pathways that weave through the terraces, and it's best to visit in the morning or near sunset when the sun is softer.
Jungle Swings
Tumblr media
Bali is known for its jungle swings, which can be found over rivers, waterfalls, and rice terraces across the island. These swings offer a unique way to experience Bali’s stunning landscapes, capture picturesque photos in flowing dresses, and enjoy a thrilling rush of adrenaline. Many swings are surrounded by Instagram-worthy structures like bird nests and hearts, adding extra charm to your shots.
Split Gates (Candi Bentar)
Tumblr media
A symbol of Bali, split gates are found everywhere, but the most famous are at Pura Lempuyang, one of Bali's oldest and most significant temples. The "Gates of Heaven" photo spot has become a global sensation, attracting hundreds of tourists daily. The skillful photography techniques used here create the illusion of floating in the sky. On clear days, Mount Agung provides a breathtaking backdrop. Arrive early in the morning for the best conditions. Pura Lempuyang is a complex of seven temples located at various levels, and reaching the main sanctuary requires climbing 1,500 steps. Are you up for the challenge?
Another iconic gate is located at the Handara Golf Resort in northern Bali, framed by lush green hills.
Waterfalls
Tumblr media
Bali's waterfalls are an Instagram sensation, each offering its own breathtaking beauty. For dramatic photos of water cascading down black stone steps, visit Kanto Lampo waterfall. If you’re after an Avatar-like experience, head to Sekumpul, the highest waterfall on the island. For more tranquil shots, Tibumana waterfall features a perfectly smooth flow of water into a blue pool—a perfectionist’s dream!
With so many unique waterfalls scattered across the island, it's worth dedicating a day to exploring them. Be prepared to get wet! Our website offers waterfall tours organized by region, making it easy to find the most scenic spots.
Volcanoes
Tumblr media
Volcanoes not only make for otherworldly photos but also create memories that last a lifetime! The most Instagrammable volcano—Mount Ijen—is actually on the neighboring island of Java. At dawn, you’ll witness a surreal scene: Martian-like landscapes, plumes of smoke rising from the crater, yellow sulfur deposits, and the star of the show—a glowing blue acid lake. Put on a respirator and snap a post-apocalyptic photo by a dried-up tree, with the toxic lake as your backdrop.
Nusa Penida
Tumblr media
Just off the coast of Bali, Nusa Penida is a small island that’s a favorite among bloggers for its stunning turquoise waters and hidden beaches.
Diamond Beach, one of the most Instagrammable beaches in the region, requires descending a steep staircase carved into the rock. The beauty starts as soon as you begin your descent, offering perfect spots for a striking photoshoot.
Another must-see is Kelingking Beach, home to the famous T-Rex-shaped cliff. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can tackle the challenging hike down to the secret beach at the bottom. The trek is steep and involves climbing down the cliffside, but the reward is a peaceful stretch of white sand nestled between towering cliffs. Though swimming is not recommended due to the powerful waves, lounging under the shade and taking in the views is a well-deserved treat after the climb.
Broken Beach
Tumblr media
At Broken Beach, waves crash through a natural archway carved into the cliffs. While swimming isn’t possible here, the view is simply spectacular, making it a prime location for photos.
Keep in mind that Nusa Penida lacks public transportation, so renting a scooter or a car with a driver is essential. Alternatively, you can book a tour that covers all the main attractions. We offer both one-day tours and longer stays, allowing you to explore every corner of this exotic island at your own pace.
Tumblr media
Bali and its surroundings are made for Instagram, drawing bloggers from all over the world. In addition to its natural beauty, the island offers countless Instagram-worthy villas, cafés, and beach clubs. Come to Bali and embrace your inner aesthete!

Five Bixes and an Egg
So my other female laid two eggs, both infertile. This gave me a perfect opportunity to showcase the size difference to really show how much they’ve grown.
They used to be smaller than their own heads. Only a month ago.
p.s. this clutch is nicknamed Bixbees because I accidentally named their 4am alarm “Heckin Bixbees” instead of “Check boxbabies”. Bixbee just kind of stuck.
